EU Legislation
In 2005, the European Commission adopted the Eco-design of Energy-using products (EuP) framework Directive, which allows for the introduction of measures to improve the energy efficiency of 14 different product groups – including televisions.
Under this Directive, studies were commissioned for each product area. The study for televisions was completed in August 2007, and made the following recommendations:
- Introducing a minimum requirement for on-mode energy consumption
- Introducing a minimum requirement for stand-by energy consumption
- Introducing a mandatory energy efficiency label for televisions
The report estimated that introducing these measures could reduce energy consumption from TVs by 40%. This Directive provides a great opportunity to significantly improve the energy efficiency of televisions. However, it is not yet clear how closely the European Commission’s draft measures will follow the report’s recommendations, and it is unlikely that measures will be in place in member states before 2009.
The European Commission has now published its working document on the implementing measures to be introduced for TVs, which was discussed at a Consultation Forum on 16 October 2008. The document can be accessed by clicking here. ee-tv and our supporters have produced the following response to the working document. Download it here.
